9. Curriculum Development

Pioneering Educational Innovations: An Updated Summary of Key Initiatives in Teaching

Advancement in Curriculum Design

  • Groundbreaking Course Introduction: Successfully championed the proposal for a new course—ARCH 712: Advanced Critical Thinking in the Built Environment—which received formal approval from the CAA in Fall 2020. This new course not only fills a vital gap in the curriculum but also introduces a forward-thinking approach to the pedagogy of architecture and design.
  • Strategic Curriculum Restructuring: Developed and introduced ARCH 366: History and Theories of Contemporary Architecture, designed as a comprehensive replacement for two previously existing courses (ARCH 340 and ARCH 346). This curriculum overhaul streamlined the educational pathway, ensuring a more cohesive and enriched learning experience for students.

Utilizing Blended Learning Techniques

  • Course Transformation through Blended Learning: Leveraged my expertise in Blended Learning Transformation (BLT) to modernize the existing MECH 710: Research Methodologies course for PhD students. The transformation, carried out in Fall 2019, merged face-to-face instruction with digital learning modalities, thereby enhancing the educational experience and meeting the evolving needs of higher education.

Adaptability in Remote Learning

  • Navigating the Digital Transition: In light of the current landscape, swiftly transitioned to conducting classes online across multiple levels—undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs.
  • Innovative Platform Utilization: Implemented Slack as a dynamic online virtual environment specifically for design courses, enriching the learning experience by facilitating real-time collaboration and feedback.

Pedagogical Exploration

  • Evolving Teaching Methodologies: Drawing from a rich background of teaching and studying experiences, I have actively experimented with various teaching-learning pedagogies to enhance course outcomes. These include:
  • Active Learning: Engaging students in tasks and activities that require them to apply and analyze information, thereby promoting higher-order thinking skills.
  • Experiential Learning: Providing students with hands-on, real-world experiences to reinforce theoretical learning.
  • Project-Based Learning: Incorporating long-term projects that require students to solve real-world problems, encouraging a deeper understanding of course material.
