  • Major Project – The potential use of Super Absorbent Polymer in concrete.
  • Abstract – Super absorbent polymers (SAP) are cross limited polymers that can absorb large amount of liquid and swell substantially is form a soft and insoluble gel. This characteristic can be used for self-sealing cracks in concrete. SAP promotes autogenous healing by releasing their absorbed water during hydration process. Super Absorbent Polymer is helpful to control autogenous shrinkage of concrete at early age. A property of SAP allows it to act like internal curing agent. This provides a new alternative way to control early age cracking of modern concrete. In the current paper use of super absorbent polymer as an internal curing agent is investigated by mechanical tests like compression, split tensile and four point bending tests. For this experimental program dry and wet curing of M30 grade specimens considered with 0%, 0.5% & 1% of superabsorbent polymer by weight of cementitious material in concrete. The experimental results showed that increase in amount of super absorbent polymer in concrete helpful for hydration process of cement in both dry and wet curing conditions.
