Medical Laboratory Technologist
Key responsibilities
- Perform all applicable General Lab section techniques according to written SOPs.
- Performing laboratory tests in order to produce reliable and precise data to support scientific investigations.
- Carrying out routine tasks accurately and following strict methodologies to carry out analyses.
- Follows established procedures or protocols and utilizes aseptic technique to perform experiments.
- Summarizes results of analysis and turns in file for final report.
- Adheres to internal quality controls established for the department.
- Sets up, operates, and maintains standard laboratory equipment.
- Understanding of the principles of biochemistry, hematology, clinical pathology, immunology, serology and coagulation studies.
- New tests and procedures are regularly devised, developed, and implemented.
- Trains and teaches colleagues and other healthcare professionals.
- Ensures to discuss timetables, equipment requirements, and work plans.
- Ensures that all health and safety procedures are understood and followed correctly.
- To set up equipment, instruments, and apparatus required for specific laboratory tests.
- Maintains daily entry of the specimens, their results, and daily statistics in computer or register.
- Recognize the critical value or abnormal test results, and follow instruction procedures for reporting.
- Uses universal safety precautions to protect self and co-workers from biohazardous materials, including blood-borne pathogens.
- Completes annual biohazard/universal precaution safety training, as appropriate.
- Develops, in conjunction with the designated persons, the laboratory policies, protocols, and techniques.
- Follows up on the quality control program.
- Prepare orders and inventories for reagents and other consumables to ensure continuous availability and also liaises with suppliers.
- Supports other technologists in case they face any technical problem.
- Updates the laboratory data and patient results, and maintains accurate data records.
- Checks pending log in LIS daily. Maintains communication with the patient, if necessary (Sample recollection).
- Prioritize the workload, ensuring that diagnostic services are provided to agreed standards.
- Be aware of the specific security issues concerned with the laboratory and take prompt action if necessary.
- Highlight the need for new or updated departmental procedures.
- Answer general telephone enquiries from patients and doctors, as appropriate.
- Attend and contribute to regular lab meetings.
- Maintain own continuing professional development.
