- Food Preparation: Commis chefs assist with preparing ingredients for cooking. This can include washing, chopping, peeling vegetables, butchering meat, preparing sauces, or assembling salads.
- Basic Cooking Tasks: They may be responsible for simple cooking tasks, such as grilling, sautéing, boiling, or frying under the supervision of more senior chefs.
- Maintaining Cleanliness: Keeping the kitchen clean is a critical part of the job. A commis chef will regularly clean workstations, wash utensils, and ensure the kitchen is sanitary and free of hazards.
- Stock Management: Commis chefs often help with stocking kitchen supplies, organizing ingredients, and ensuring that the pantry or fridge is stocked and properly stored.
- Assisting Senior Chefs: Commis chefs work under the direction of more senior chefs (such as the chef de partie, sous chef, or head chef). They may be assigned specific tasks and help with mise en place (preparing and setting up ingredients) for the shift.
- Learning Cooking Techniques: As a basic-level chef, this is the opportunity to learn fundamental cooking techniques and kitchen operations from the more experienced team.
