As “Process and quality assurance Engineer” my job description is related to wide range of treatment systems of sea water to produce quality water for steam generation, condensate treatment, demineralized water, fresh cooling water, potable water, plant water at TAKREER refinery. In addition to above, refinery fuel gas system, flaring system, tank farm area, refinery's Waste Water System, Sea water thermal desalination system, Spent caustic system, steam generation system, condensate recovery and polishing system, Instrument and Service air system and Nitrogen distribution and metering system. Few of job description activities are mentioned as under;


  • Preparation of monthly reports addressing overall performance of each system
  • Monitoring of liquid waste water quality as defined in environmental specification
  • Technical evaluations of chemicals and keeping liaison with “Purchase Department” to ensure its availability
  • Conducting studies related to operational problems and providing technical support to OPERATIONS team
  • Worked on Atmospheric residue Hydrotreater, Licensor CLG (Shevron Lummus Global) for feedstock preparation of RFCC
  • The unit is high pressure multi-module hydrotreater with cumulative capacity of 178 KBSD includes hardware of centrifugal compressors (RGC), Make-up gas compressors, heaters, fractionators, strippers, amine absorbers, flaring system, naphtha caustic treating system and hydrogen Recovery System (Licenser UOP)
  • On client end, looked after EPC, for all pre-commissioning, commissioning and start-up activities of Residue Hydrotreater Unit
  • Activities include Loop testing, Function testing, plant mechanical completion, PSSR and start-up
  • Liaison with Licensor (CLG) for preparation of SOPs of unit inertization, amine degreasing, HHIT (pressure testing), heater dry-out, reaction section & fractionation section commissioning, normal start-up, shutdown, emergency handling scenarios
  • Team training for taking over and subsequent operation of unit.

As Group Head Process Engineering section, my job scope included following activities related to Utilities, Gas Concentration Unit, Vis-breaking Unit, Asphalt Air Blowing Unit, Tankage area & Effluent treatment plant of refinery;


  • To prepare daily performance summaries for plant monitoring through lab results and suggesting corrective actions to OPERATIONS DEPARTMENT
  • To conduct various “Process Engineering” studies (pressure drop and pump hydraulics studies and control valve calculations) for plant modification under MOC (Management of Change), development of P&ID, PFDs, plot plans, data sheets, HAZID & HAZOP study related to Utilities, Effluent Treatment Plant, Tank Form area, Gas Concentration Unit & Vis-breaking Unit of the refinery as per relevant codes and standards such as ASME, API, ASTM, NFPA etc
  • Preparation and implementation of training program for training of process engineers at various refinery units
  • Performance and efficiency monitoring of boilers, turbines, centrifugal compressors, pumps and heat exchangers installed at Process & Utilities units of refinery
  • Ensuring refinery effluent quality and monitoring of effluent treatment plant (BOC, COD, pH, Oil & Grease, TDS etc)
  • Analysis and control of stack emissions (SOx, NOx, CO) keeping close liaison with the EPA (Environment Protection Association-Pakistan) certified lab
  • Well conversant with API practices and regulatory codes and standards i.e. API 560, API 521, API 650, API 611, API 610, engineering design standards of various companies (ADNOC, JGC) for design philosophies & selection criteria etc
  • Project studies along with, purchase requisitions & orders, evaluation of data sheets and Technical bid evaluation for equipment selection

  • Preparation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for shutdown, commissioning, startup and critical activities of UTILITIES section ( of the refinery
  • Conducting incident investigation using PICS (data analysis software)
  • To economize the chemical consumption of cooling water, boiler feed water, and effluent treatment systems while ensuring their quality
  • To collect monthly plant production and operating data, evaluated unit efficiencies by relating chemicals and energy consumption and prepares reports with comments
  • Preparation of Revenue and capital budget by department in line with Division / Organization goals and targets
  • Also monitoring expenditure throughout the fiscal year by close liaison with concerned departments and updating top management on a quarterly basis.

Shift Engineer

I have been leading operations team (area operators, DCS operators) to ensure smooth operations, shut down, start-up and planning turnarounds of Utilities units of refinery, which included following systems;


  • Instrument air system three stage centrifugal compressor (Make Elliot, USA)
  • Pressure swing type Air dryers (Make: DELAIR, ITALY) with PLC control
  • INIONIC ITALBA PLC controlled De-mineralized Water Treatment Plant
  • Steam generation/ condensate recovery system
  • Forced draft, dual (oil + gas) fuel, high pressure boilers, Make: MACCHI, Italy, Fire water / deluge system
  • Cross Flow, Induced Draft, open re-circulating type Cooling Tower with circulation rate of 10,000 m3/hr driven by Condensing Steam Turbines & 1.1 MW motor
  • NALCO Cooling water chemical treatment system
  • Main and Acid gas flare smokeless flaring system
  • Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) of THAMES WATER ASIA PACIFIC with PLC /DCS based operation of two parallel trains having a total capacity of 340m3/hour with API, dissolved air flotation (DAF) and aerobic digestion technology.
