Roles And Responsibilities

  • Prepare, administer, Supervise and follow up all training activities in terms of scheduling and drawing up of short & medium-term plans and attainment level for all operator classifications below shift supervisor level to enhance knowledge and experience for all trainees.
  • Develop and administer oral and written qualification test questions for the various levels to ensure uniformity of training results while evaluating trainees within the section.
  • Maintain training database for all operators to keep abreast of all training activities and update record of all training requirements and to highlight deficiencies.
  • Review operating training manuals (OTMs), procedures, stranding orders and checklists as required on regular basis to ensure that modifications are incorporated and relevant procedures up to date.
  • Liaises with training and FHS departments for development of specific training needs and content including modules, fire school, safety school, permit and gas courses to maintain standards of trainees regarding operations, fire prevention and safety as well as improve safety awareness in all employees and ensure safe working environment.
  • Involved in FCCU/5CDU/LPG/Horton sphere/ NRC/ POLY/GCU units Commissioning, Start-up, shutdown & Normal running activities.
  • Panel operations through DCS during normal operation, Start-up, Shutdown & emergency situation (like leak, fire, etc.)
  • Take corrective actions for process adjustments to unit variables.
  • Take emergency actions to shut down as necessary.
  • Perform through routine checks of the unit and associated equipment in area of responsibility.
  • Prepare equipment for maintenance.
  • Ensure equipment is safely isolated.
  • Monitors unit operations and initiates adjustments to unit parameters to meet product specifications with minimum loss and product degradation.
  • Prepare work requests to correct defects and submits other work lists for repairs at unit shutdowns to ensure availability of operation of standby equipment and to ascertain availability and serviceability of all emergency and fire equipment.
  • Supervise operation of all units assigned when conditions are abnormal and exercise personal control when conditions are critical, i.e., during emergencies to safeguard the units and equipment under the job holders’ control to ensure efficient and timely safe shutdown and startup of the assigned unit.
  • Direct the preparation of equipment for maintenance work and stipulates safety precautions to ensure proper isolation and decommission of equipment before maintenance work begins.
  • Directs equipment testing and decommissioning upon completion of work to ensure compliance with best operating and safe work practices and procedures.
  • Closely monitors unit parameters, discusses problems and operating changes with Supervisors and position relief to keep abreast of all changes and current state of unit operations.
  • Prepare safety meeting reports to improve safety awareness among the shift personnel, to ensure a safe working environment and to eliminate accidents.
  • Job Key Result Areas:
  • Makes detailed inspection of all units to ensure operating instructions and procedures are correctly & conscientiously complied with, equipment’s are correctly operated & maintained in a safe & efficient manner and a good standard of housekeeping is enforced in the units.
  • Monitors consumption of chemicals, catalysts, lubricants and consumables used to ensure economic usage.
  • Checks and updates status of all maintenance work in progress within the section to ensure maximum availability of critical as well as standby equipment’s.
  • Ensures compliance with company’s Permit to Work system, safe work practices, guidelines & standards.
  • Checks and reports on the training of personnel, prepares appraisals and conducts tests to monitor progress and ensure competent unit manpower. Advises senior staff of any personnel related concerns including competency, training and disciplinary action issues.
  • Carries out emergency checks and conducts safety talks to increase safety awareness of unit crew and establish highest safety standards. Routinely evaluates assigned staff’s knowledge and adherence to safe work practices, guidelines & standards.
  • Jobholder directly supervises Head Operators, Control Operators and Area Outside Operators (AOOP) as well as Trainees assigned on shift.
  • Administers first line disciplinary action to maintain discipline and order on shift.
  • Responsible for compliance to safe operating, EH&S and PSM procedures, standards, guidelines, principals, and best practices by all operating, maintenance and contractor personnel working in the section on his shift.
  • It was stressed to him that the Shift Supervisor are fully responsible and accountable for any process/personal incidents/accidents and plant related trips/upsets which are related to poor human performance, and which were preventable.
  • It was also explained to him the importance of the Shift Supervisors role been in the front line with regards to the “Bapco of Tomorrow” focusing on changing the culture and maintaining a positive outlook/attitude at this juncture.
