As a Graduate Teaching and Research Assistant, Mostafa conducted extensive research on new materials to advance Lithium Air Battery Development, resulting in a published paper as the first author in the Journal of Physical Chemistry C. He then transitioned to ADNOC Refining, where he spearheaded various growth initiatives worth billions of US$, including a new refinery and an aromatics project. During the COVID pandemic, he was given the responsibility to improve the structural cost of the company by discontinuing old assets and finding solutions to better utilize newer assets.

Mostafa's passion for driving industrial development in the UAE led him to join Ta'ziz, Abu Dhabi's new industrial champion, as one of the founding employees. Here he set up the corporate governance for the investment company, which will overlook a portfolio of chemical investments, bringing in foreign direct investment and local investors in the downstream sector. Today, Mostafa is working in the Asset Management Division of Ta'ziz, driving the setup of three joint venture companies between Ta'ziz and international partners, key to taking final investment decisions on projects driven by these companies.

  • Provided direct support to the CEO, to help establish TA’ZIZ as a fully independent investment company that will manage in the first phase ~$5 billion of chemical companies, including the development of the corporate governance structure and organizational policies, procedures and processes including the company’s delegation of authority
  • Co-lead on the first public-private partnership transaction within the UAE downstream sector that secure investment worth ~20% of the total Ta'ziz chemica portfolio from local investors guided by the leadership of ADNOC and ADQ unlocking value and driving a shared vision for the downstream sector development
  • Supported the financing workstream activities aimed at securing the necessary debt funding for the TA’ZIZ projects during the development phase up to Project Financing
  • Preparation and monitoring of the five-year business plan, performance scorecard, enterprise risk management, risk registers and budget in coordination with various stakeholders
  • Preparation of the pre-read materials for the Board of Directors and main committees in the company such as the Standing Committee and Executive Committee along with extensive shareholder alignment

  • Conducted an economic assessment on the potential preponing of Abu Dhabi Refinery (ADR) closure and assessed the short-term and long-term impacts on the business including strategic products such as LPG and Gasoline including alignment with Shareholders
  • Led the ADR Business Impact Assessment study that led to the recommendation of the Condensate Debottlenecking Project (CDP) and successfully managed all deliverables required for a Gate 1 decision to proceed to Pre-FEED
  • Led the implementation of various strategic initiatives such as the LPG sphere turnaround preponement that avoided additional ~$100 mllion Capex for LPG spheres
  • Liaised with internal and external stakeholders to develop commercial principles for future business agreements including the revision of existing pricing formulas and presented the recommendations to ADNOC Refining ELT.
  • Involved in various major feasibility studies and economic assessments aligned with ADNOC's growth and diversification strategy including the mega ~$20 billion New Refinery Project, ~$3.5 billion Crude Flexibility Project, ~$3 billion Gasoline and Aromatics Project and ~$0.5 billion Waste Heat Recovery Project
  • Proposed Capex and process optimization initiative within the Refinery Offgas Recovery Project (ROGR) that led to a Capex saving of 5% and an IRR improvement of 0.5%
  • Participated in the optimization of the feedstock for Borouge’s planned Mixed Feed Cracker (MFC) which led to the identification of butane integration opportunities between ADNOC Refining and Borouge with significant IRR improvement close to 2% on a $6 billion mega project
  • Preparation of feasibility studies in accordance with ADNOC Value Assurance Process (VAP) including Decision Support Packages (DSP) and Investment Committee presentations implementing the best practices of the Front-end loading (FEL) project maturation process
