· Run a self-test for anesthesia machine & check patient monitor before the case start.

· Gather all the supplies and make sure the instruments needed for induction of anesthesia is working properly and available at all times.

· Make sure the warming blankets are available for all cases.

· Make sure the other equipment needed for the surgery especially if the patient is high risk are presently available in the room.

· Check the anesthesia consent if it is signed by patient and verify with patient if she/ he understood the type of anesthesia she/he will receive.

· Prepare the medications needed in the case from the Omnicell and perform an individual check of every medication with Anesthesiologist.

· Proper use of B Braun infusion pump for all medication.

· Assist the Anesthesiologist to put the necessary IV line prior to start the procedure.

· Escort patient inside the operating room.

· Attentive and participating during Sign in.

· Explain to the patient before attaching to the patient monitor.

· Assist the Anesthesiologist during the induction of anesthesia.

· Return all empty narcotic ampules in the Omnicell and make sure prescription is properly fill up.

· Be alert to the Anesthesiologist needs being one step ahead of her/his call.

· Assist Anesthesiologist when giving any type of nerve block to the patient.

· Make sure the mask, laryngoscope, airway and syringe are ready before extubating the patient.

· Disinfect, check & arrange all the used items.

· Check temperature of the patient prior to transfer in PACU.

· Close the Omnicell every after each case.

· Assist the circulating nurse to wheel out the patient in the room.

· Proper hand over to the receiving nurse in PACU.

1. SCRUB NURSE in OR

  • Prepared OR by ensuring it met asepsis standards, as well as setting out, organizing and counting all tools and equipment necessary for each procedure.

  • Prepared operating rooms by maneuvering operating room lamps for illumination and laying out sterile instruments and supplies on stainless steel tables, including gauze sponges, magnifying glasses and medications.
  • Positioned patients in operating rooms to prepare for surgical procedures, using supine, prone and sitting surgical positions.
  • Review patient’s chart for completeness.
  • Gather and perform Sign In by identify the patient using 2 identifier, check consent for operation. Verifies pre-operative procedure and site.
  • Escort patient inside the operating room. Position her on bed observing proper strapping, warmth, comfort and reassurance.
  • Remain with the patient and Anesthesiologist during the induction of anesthesia and provide the immediate needs.
  • Observe aseptic technique during insertion of Foley’s catheter.
  • Assist the surgeons for gowning.
  • Time Out called before the surgery begins.
  • Lead husband beside the patient before the surgery start.
  • Complete patient record and documentation.
  • Observe the progress of operation and keep the member of the team supplied with the necessary items. Be alert to scrub nurse needs being one step ahead of her call.
  • Perform count of sponges, needles and instruments with the scrub nurse and write on the board provided.
  • Communicate with surgical team especially the Anesthesiologist about the EBL (Estimated Blood Loss) from time to time.
  • Call the attention of team for Sign Out right after the surgery finish.
  • Assist the scrub nurse for applying the pressure dressing and secure the drains if present and transferring patient to the bed.
  • Accomplishes charting in the nurse’s notes including operation performed, type of anesthesia, medication, drains, packing and general condition of the patient. Have the surgeon and anesthesiologist sign their records before leaving the room.

3. RECOVERY(PACU) ROOM NURSE in OR

  • Routinely check the Emergency Crash Cart for completeness and functions, check the expiration date of emergency drugs and supplies.
  • Daily check of the Defibrillator, Glucometer, ABG machine, Resuscitaire & other equipment present in recovery room.
  • Admit patient for recovery after the procedure.
  • Assures understanding, completeness and accuracy of endorsement upon receiving of patient after surgery.
  • Took vitals and assessed patients in recovery room following surgical procedures.
  • Recorded observations, patient assessments and progress and physician's orders, using cerner.
  • Provided individualized care and dedicated oversight to patients on average in post-operative recovery room.
